Traveling by normal trains, you are advised to buy a sleeper as the carriages for hard seats may be rather crowded, especially during the holidays. Besides, you are recommended to buy the sleeper tickets in advance because it's usually in a great demand.
Among these normal rides, Z257/ Z255 and Z27/ Z25 are most recommended and popular among budget travelers, since they could save hotel cost and daytime for sightseeing.
Passengers can also travel by air which only takes about 2 - 2.5 hours, but it will usually cost more. Besides, the airports are a little far from the downtown area, and it takes time for the transfer, which makes the total air travel time almost the same as the high speed rail travel time.

Can I buy a ticket from Hongqiao to Hankou at a different station?
Let's say, Shanghai Railway Station near the People's Square for example?

Yes, I read on this website that you can buy tickets at any railway station in the mainland, it is not necessary to be the one your train will use.

Hi, My husband and I want to travel by train in January.
When can/do we book the train tickets? We are from Australia. I am aware that some transport can be busy near Chinese new year.
Thanks,

Thank you for your inquiry.
Ticket would begin for sale 30 days within departure date, you may make an online booking around 30 days in advance. Tickets are indeed very hard to get during Chinese New Year time. It is recommended to keep your schedule a little flexible and prepare some back up options in advance.

First class seats on bullet trains
What is the difference between first and second class on bullet trains? Is first class worth paying extra?

First class seats did have more space and a little more comfortable, but for me, second class seat is also acceptable. They are just like economy class seats on flights. You can search some photos online about first and second class.
