Currently, Changsha – Zhangjiajie High Speed Railway is under construction and may be put into service in 2021. After its completion, Beijing and Zhangjiajie will be connected by high speed trains, by then a single trip will take 6.5 – 9 hours only, which saves a lot of time.
Only 2 direct flights are operated between the two cities, taking around 2 hours. Even in low season, the ticket fare for an economy class seat may be CNY 850 or so. If pressed for time, passengers can also make a flight transfer in Changsha and catch a train or bus to Zhangjiajie. In this case, there will be more choices and ticket price won’t be too high, especially in peak season.
In contrast, a rail trip costs less, but it takes a longer time. Although passengers can buy a sleeper to lie down onboard, the long-distance journey is not suitable for those who are pressed for time. Budget travelers with more time can choose to make a rail ride and they have a chance to see the beautiful scenery along the way.

See from the reviews, this hotel should be a good one. I am considering it too or a hostel instead like Red Lantern House. It is closer to Beijing Railway Station, about 6km. You can take a taxi or maybe metro line 2.

It is a little bit risky as sometimes soft sleeper bed can be sold out on some of these rides. YOu can check the ticket availability often and decide accordingly.

Can I collect the tickets from Changsha to Zhangjiajie in Beijing as well?

It is no problem to collect tickets for both sections in Beijing before your departure and yes, it is recommended to do so. Otherwise, we will have problem for queue again at Changsha Station. It will be a waste of time.
