Shanghai - Hohhot Train
As of now, only two pairs of normal trains are running daily between Shanghai / Shanghai South Railway Station and Hohhot Railway Station, taking 25 – 27 hours. The distance is 2,620 kilometers (1,628 miles). Ticket fare for a soft sleeper is CNY732.5/ 674 per person. High speed trains may be operated between the two cities in 2019 along with the opening of Beijing – Hohhot High Speed Railway, by then the duration between Shanghai and Hohhot may be shortened to 7 – 10 hours.
For those who are pressed for time, flight is a good choice. Direct flights between the two cities take approximately 3 hours and ticket fare for an economy class seat can be low to CNY500 or so in low season.

Currently, there is no bullet train between the two cities, but passengers can make a quick high speed train trip between Shanghai and Hohhot with a transit in Beijing. The duration will be reduced to 7.5 – 9 hours.

Nanjing
Known as the capital city of six or ten dynasties in ancient Chinese history, Nanjing is currently the capital city of Jiangsu Province and a hot tourist destination in China. When going to the city, tourists should not miss the Confucius Temple, Xiaoling Mausoleum of Ming Dynasty, Qinhuai River, and Nanjing City Wall, etc. The city can be easily reached by air, train, and long-distance bus. When traveling around, tourists can take city bus, metro or taxi.

We are looking for train Z282 from Shanghai to Hohhot
It says we are traveling from Shanghai south. Is it far from Shanghai Station and our hotel Holiday Inn Shanghai Jinxiu?

The distance to your hotel is around 14km. If you take a taxi from hotel, it should be around 30 to 40min. There is also a Nanchuan Bus can be used. The main station is on a totally different direction.

Is there any other ways to travel faster to Hohhot instead of 25 hours train?
Is flight the only possible way? If possible, I want to avoid flight as much as possible. Thanks

Flight is indeed the fastest one and most direct option too, only 3 hours on the way. If you prefer to go by rail/land, you may choose to go to Beijing by high speeds first and then again by sleeper ride to Hohhot. This option still takes a long time, but better than 25 hours trip.
