Running Route of Xi'an - Chengdu High Speed Train

Xi'an - Jiangyou Railway: The construction of this section has begun since 2012 and it was completed on December 6th, 2017. The duration between Jiangyou and Xi'an is shortened to 3 hours or so. The designed highest speed is 250 km/h (155 mph) and the length is 534 kilometers (332 miles).

As this section will traverse Qinling Mountain, many tunnels and bridges have been planned to avoid detours, which account for about 92.1% of the whole Xi'an-Chengdu High Speed Rail Line. On October 13, 2016, the 9-kilometer-long (5.6 miles) Fuchuan Tunnel was cut through. Since then, all tunnels along the way have been finished and the constructors have started laying tracks in a large scale.

Jiangyou - Chengdu section: This section is a part of Chengdu - Mianyang - Leshan Intercity High Speed Railway which has been put into use since December 20th, 2014 and the length is 124 kilometers (77 miles). The current running speed is up to 124 mi/h (200 km/h) and the journey time is about 1 -2 hours. In addition, you can take this rail to visit Leshan Giant Buddha and Mt. Emei from Chengdu; the duration is about 45 - 90 minutes and 1 - 1.5 hours respectively.

What to see along the way

As the train goes through central Shaanxi Plain, Qinling Mountain to Sichuan Basin, the sceneries along the way will be a feast for the eyes. When traveling, the vast plain, the fertile land, well-growing crops, well-arranged houses and those who are working in the fields will give you a chance to see the lives of local peasants. The fresh air, blue sky, white cloud, green hills and blue waters between Qinling Mountains will make you want to stop and visit for a while. But you also should get ready as Chengdu to Xi'an High Speed Train and vice versa will go through several long tunnels in Qinling Mountains. When arriving at Sichuan Basin, you will know why Chengdu is renowned as Heavenly State and the abundant natural resources and cultural and historical heritages in this city will be worth a visit and make you indulge in pleasures without stop.
Currently, there are one normal train operates from Xi'an to Chengdu and 3 from Chengdu to Xi'an with the duration of 10.5 – 15 hours. It costs CNY 348.5 - 355 for a soft sleeper, CNY 222.5 - 230 for a hard sleeper, and CNY 128 - 128.5 for a hard seat.

Aside from rail travel, one can also travel by flight or by coach from Chengdu to Xi'an or vice versa. There is no need to say that flights take the shortest time, about 1.5 - 2 hours, but cost the most, CNY 600 or above for an economy class seat. The coaches cost less, about CNY 200 - 240, but taking a long time of about 9 hours; in addition, it will be tiring and boring to travel by coach for such a long journey and the ticket is not easy to get for foreign passengers. One thing you also should know is that flights and coaches are more easily affected by weather than trains.

Yes, you are right, there is no any stopover between Xi'an and Chengdu on this G89. You will get off at final station directly after 1 stop.

The main difference should be the speed, but if you are looking for this trip between Xi'an and Chengdu, it seems no big difference. Some D rides even runs faster than G rides.

Can I upgrade from second class seat to business class on G89?
I prefer to have this fastest train but I only got a second class seat. There is no business class online so I am not able to make a change. Is it possible to have someone to change for me at station?

Thank you for your inquiry.

If it shows no tickets online, it is the same situation at station ticket counter. However, you may have a try after boarding. After you board the train, you can find a staff and ask if there are free seats for business class or first class. Occasionally, there might be free seats if someone changed or cancelled the ticket at last minute.

It depends on the rail type mainly. If you will take the slow rides, it will be departs from Xi'an Railway Station (or the South station which is not recommended as it is very far away) and reach Chengdu Railway Station. If you will use high speed service, you will need to use Xi'an North Station and will reach Chengdu East Station.

High speed rail is more recommended. From East Station to your hotel, you can take line 2 to Chunxilu first and then change to line 3 to Qianfenglu, exit D. Then you can walk to reach the hotel.
