Beijing - Pingyao High Speed Train

About 3 pairs of high speed trains are running between Beijing and Pingyao daily, with the travel time about 4 hours. A single ride on a second class seat costs CNY 226 (USD 32).

Apart from that, two pairs of normal speed trains run overnight between Beijing Fengtai Railway Station and Pingyao Railway Station with a duration of 10 - 11.5 hours and a soft sleeper of CNY 243-263 (USD 35-38).

Running Routes

 Beijing Fengtai - Shijiazhuang: This section is running along Beijing-Shijiazhuang High Speed Railway, which was put into use on 26th December, 2012 and it makes the journey between the two cities cut down to 1 - 2.5 hours or so.

 Shijiazhuang - Taiyuan: This section shares the railway track with Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan High Speed Rail Line which was operated since 1st April, 2009. The travel time along this section is about 1.5 - 2.5 hours.

 Taiyuan - Pingyao: As a part of Datong - Pingyao - Xi'an High Speed Railway, this section has been in service since 1st July, 2014. Since then, the travel between the two cities is very convenient and duration is around 31 – 55 minutes.

Difference between second class and first class
I intend to book the train G625 later this year. I am wondering what the difference is between second class and first class

The first class seat is wider, the distance between two rows is bigger and each row has two chairs on either side of the aisle.

Does Pingyao ancient city open for visit now?
Should I book ticket online as I heard many sites ask for online reservation now? I am living in China.

It opens to tourist now. I also heard people need to make online reservation first but seems only option for Chinese people. I was told online passport holders can do it on spot.

I am not sure usually how many seats can be offered to this Pingyao trip, but if you mean in total, it should be nearly 160 first class seats.

How reliable is the time schedule for high speed train from Pingyao to Beijing?
Is it OK to rely on this train to come on time the same day to catch a plane to Europe?

Usually it is fine for a short trip like this. However, it is still safer if you prepare some extra time like 1 hour for any unpredictable delay.

This depends on the rail line. Usually the top speed is 300km/h, but for this route to Pingyao, maybe 250km/h.
