Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City Trains

Basic Information

Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City Train Route
There is a 1,072 miles’ (1,726 kilometers) long north-south rail trunk between Hanoi and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). Running along the beautiful east coast of the country, the trains linking the capital Hanoi in the north and Saigon in the south enable tourists to see Vietnam in a slow but artistic way. SE3 and SE4 enjoy the highest speed, which makes the whole trip within 30 hours. Others would take longer - 30 to 35 hours. Although it is slow and more expensive than the open tour bus, the sleeper makes the trip more comfortable.

There are totally four pairs of Reunification Expresses between these two cities, and no luxury tourist train is available. The top grade on this line is soft berth with 4 beds in one cabin, then hard berth with 6 beds in one cabin. Soft seats are available on all of the trains, and hard seats are available on two of the trains. All carriages and cabins are air-conditioned with the comfortable seats/berths. Western toilets are set on sleeper carriages.

About 'Reunification Express'

Some guidebooks call the railway from Hanoi to Saigon the Reunification Express. Vietnam was divided into two parts and the rail route was cut off in 1956. The country was re-unified in 1975, and the rail route was resumed in Dec, 1976. It re-connected the country from north to south. That’s why people call it the Reunification Express.

Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City

Saigon is the city's traditional name. It still appears as Sai Gon in the railway schedule and on the train ticket. On the station’s building, it’s also “Sai Gon” in big letters. Since the end of the Vietnamese war, the official name for this city was changed to Ho Chi Minh City, however, most people still call it Saigon.
