How to Get to the Great Wall from Hong Kong

To make Great Wall tours from Hong Kong, you should take a flight or train from Hong Kong to Beijing first. The flight and train distances between Hong Kong and the Great Wall are about 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) and 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) respectively. Upon arrival, take a city bus or train to Great Wall. A direct visit from Hong Kong needs at least two or three days. If you want to make a day trip,  a transfer at Shenzhen to take Shenzhen - Beijing overnight high speed trains is needed. You can follow the guide below to travel there easily.
 

Step 1: From Hong Kong to Beijing

The Great Wall snakes up and down the mountain ridges, grasslands, and deserts in many provinces of China. Among all the sections, Badaling and Mutianyu in Beijing are top choices and highly recommended to you. Thus, you need to go from Hong Kong to Beijing first.

By Flight: Fly from Hong Kong Airport to Beijing Capital Airport. The trip takes 3 to 4 hours. There are about 50 departures every day. The prices of the flight tickets vary from CNY850 to 2,600 according to seasons.

By High Speed Train: The high speed train departs from Hong Kong West Kowloon Railway Station to Beijing West Railway Station at 08:05 every day. It takes around 9 hours. The business class seat costs CNY 3,369, and the first class seat and the second class seat cost CNY 1,724 and CNY 1,077, respectively.

By Through Train: The train departs from Hung Hom Railway Station for Beijing West Railway Station at 15:15 every two days. It takes about 24 hours. A hard sleeper costs CNY505; a soft sleeper costs CNY784; a deluxe soft sleeper costs CNY1,001.

Step 2: Get to Deshengmen/ Beijing North Railway Station/ Qinghe Railway Station/Huangtudian Railway Station/ Dongzhimen

Public transport leaves for Badaling from Deshengmen, Beijing North Railway Station, or Huangtudian Railway Station; and for Mutianyu from Dongzhimen.

Step 3: Take a bus or train to Great Wall

To Badaling, you may take bus 877 from Deshengmen, high speed train from Beijing North Railway Station or Qinghe Railway Station, or S2 train from Huangtudian Railway Station. To Mutianyu, you may take bus 916 Express from Dongzhimen.
 

How to Make Day Trips from Hong Kong to Great Wall of China

Neither direct flight nor train is possible for the Great Wall of China tour from Hong Kong within one day. But the Shenzhen-Beijing overnight high speed train makes a day trip possible.

 1. Get to Shenzhen North Railway Station from downtown Hong Kong

a) You can take a direct bus to Shenzhen North Railway Station from Marco Polo Hotel, Metropark Hotel Mongkok, Sheung Wan Shun Tak Center, etc. by way of Shenzhen Bay Port. The frequency is 30 to 60 minutes. The trip takes about 2 hours, and the bus fare is HKD 80.

b) Or, you can take East Rail Line to Lok Ma Chau Station. After crossing the Futian Port, take metro Longhua Line to the North Railway Station.

 2. Take the overnight sleeper train to Beijing

The trains depart from Shenzhen North Railway Station at 19:40, 19:45, 19:50, and 19:55 on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. They reach Beijing West Railway Station at 06:56, 07:01, 07:13, and 07:18  the next early morning.

 3. Head to Great Wall for sightseeing

 4. After visiting, come back to West Railway Station, and catch a train back to Shenzhen.

The return trains depart at 20:10, 20:15, 20:20, and 20:25, and the trip takes about 11 hours. Please note that the overnight trains do not depart daily, but from Friday to Monday.

 5. Go back to Hong Kong from Shenzhen North Railway Station. 

  Tips:
1. You should apply for a visa in advance so as to enter mainland China.

2. Book the direct train ticket from Hong Kong to Beijing in advance as they are in demand in most cases.

3. The Shenzhen Bay Port is open from 6:30 to 24:00, and it usually takes 10 to 15 minutes to cross the border. 

4. The Futian Port is open from 6:30 to 22:30, and it usually takes 10 to 25 minutes to cross the border.

Staying in koolang hong Kong can I get the bullet train to visit great wall of china

Yes, since the direct bullet trains between the two cities had been opened from Sep. 23 on. However, you do need to book the tickets in advance and the tickets fare is about CNY 1000. It takes about 9 hours to arrive in Beijing. After arrival, you can take Bus Special Line 13 to Deshengmen and then walk about 2 minutes to take Bus Line 877 to the Badaling Great Wall.

Can anyone advise me of the possibility of a one day trip from Hong Kong to Beijing.
Is it possible?
I will be in Hing Kong for 4 days and would like to walk on the Great Wall.

Yes, you can but the ride will be very tight and you need to take planes travelling between the two cities and take the cable cars to save much time when you climb the great wall.
