How to Travel From Beijing to the Mutianyu Great Wall

 Single Journey Time: 1.5 - 2.5 hours

The distance from Beijing to the Mutianyu Great Wall is relatively far and there is no direct public transportation. Tourist buses are available, which can reach the Mutianyu Great Wall directly from downtown Beijing. However, the choices are not abundant and neither of them is overly convenient. Taxis are another option but they tend to be too expensive. A better alternative could be a tour group that offers hotel pick-up and drop-off services, which can save you the trouble of arranging transportation and ensure a more seamless travel experience.

08:00-10:00: Set off at Qianmen (Buses depart when all seats are taken)
09:30-12:00: Arrive at the Mutianyu Great Wall.
13:00-16:00: Get together at the shuttle bus parking lot and set off.
14:00-17:00: Arrive at Shaoyaoju Subway Station (Passengers planning to visit National Stadium and Water Cube may get off here.)
14:30-17:30: Arrive at Qianmen
 1. Take subway line 2 to Qianmen Station, exit from B, and walk around 200 meters (220 yards) to the south.
2. Take bus 2, 5, 22, 48, 59, 66, 67, 82, 93, 120, 137, 141, 599, or 622 to Qianmen station. After getting off, you can see the bus stop nearby.
 

There are more Qianmen – Mutianyu direct tourist buses to the Wall in peak travel seasons and the bus departs once fully taken. Passengers can buy the ticket from the conductor after getting on the bus.
 

Direct Shaoyaoju - Mutianyu Tourist Bus: 1h10min; CNY80 for a Round Trip

10:40: Arrive at the Mutianyu Great Wall.

14:30 - 17:30: Arrive at the west of Qianmen.
 1. Take subway line 10 to Shaoyaoju and get out from Exit E, or take subway line 13 to get out from Exit B.
2. Take bus line 119, 515, 567, 696, 547 or 942 to Shaoyaoju Bus Stop.

 1. Book tickets on the official website of the Beijing Hub of Tour Dispatch one day in advance, please note that the website does not have an English version and only supports payments via WeChat, Alipay, and UnionPay.
2. If you don't understand Chinese, you can go to the site in advance to buy tickets with the help of staff.
Note: These tourist buses can arrive near the ticket gate, so there is no need to buy a shuttle bus ticket.

Step 1: Bus Line 916 Express: 15 stops to Huairou North Avenue
Step 2: Bus line H23, H24, H35 or H36 to the spot

This route is usually crowded, with many stops along the way. The journey takes 2.5 to 3 hours and the ticket price is CNY16. In addition, the H bus stop is 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) away from the entrance. You need to walk or take a taxi to the scenic area entrance and then take a shuttle bus to the ticket gate. The shuttle bus fare is CNY10 for a single trip and CNY15 for a round trip.
 

1.  Tourists can take taxis to get there from downtown Beijing, but the taxis are not metered. Please confirm the price with the driver in advance and the round trip usually takes around CNY 600 -1,000.
2. Renting a private car with the driver in advance is advised for a group of 3 - 4 people. The cars can hold up to 4 passengers and CNY 700 - 1,200 is needed for a round trip.
  Take the Daxing Airport Express Line to Caoqiao, transfer to line 19 and get off at Jishuitan. Then take line 2 (Inner Ring) to Dongzhimen and take the Dongzhimen - Mutianyu Tourist Bus or bus 916 Express.
 Take subway line 9 to National Library Station and change to line 4 to Xizhimen. Then, transfer to line 2 to Dongzhimen and then take the Dongzhimen - Mutianyu Tourist Bus or bus line 916 Express.
  Take subway line 2 to Dongzhimen, taking 15 minutes and costing CNY3. Then, take the Dongzhimen - Mutianyu Tourist Bus or bus line 916 Express.
