Yungang Grottoes is about 16km away from Datong city center in the west, it is one of the four famous Grottoes in China, the public bus line. 3 can also take you there. The grotto was built in 460 ad and it was excavated by Tan Yao, a Buddhist monk of the Northern Wei Dynasty. The excavation took nearly 70 years to be completed and it has a history of more than 1500 years. As a world cultural heritage, it is worthy of being visited. The most exquisite grottoes are the sixth, ninth and tenth caves, which are full of reliefs. The visit takes 2-4 hours.
