Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, also called Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, is the first authorized national forest park in China. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park has been described differently, such as, majestic, eccentric, tranquil, delicate and wild. It features over 3,000 grotesque karst peaks, lucid brooks, about 400 kinds of animals, 850 kinds of plants, and hospitable climate. It appears in Chinese TV series often, and even in the world-famous film Avatar.
It is located 32 kilometers (19 miles) from urban Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, Central China.
Yuanjiajie, the core of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, is a natural platform that faces giant rocks rising from deep valleys and surrounded by higher mountains. Unique in their shapes and covered with pine trees, these rocks resemble a vivid Chinese ink painting. Among the various peaks here, you should never miss Qiankun Peak, – a towering stone column with the vertical height of 150 meters (490 feet), which is the prototype of Hallelujah Mountain in the film Avatar.
To reach Yuanjiajie, the fastest way is taking Bailong Elevator. With 335 meters’ (1,100 feet) vertical height, Bailong Elevator is the highest and fastest outdoor sightseeing elevator in the world. In 1.5 minutes moving up from the mountain foot to the summit of Yuanjiajie, the nature wonders outside the Elevator can be clear seen through the transparent glass. Taking it, you save much time on climbing, like 2 hours.
Sitting in the north of the Forest Park is Tianzi Mountain, also known as “King of Peak Forests”. For those seeking the grandeur of nature and escape from hustle and bustle of cities, Tianzi Mountain would never disappoint you, as you can always see peaks of various shapes on its west, east, and south sides. Some look like hundreds of soldiers, some like young girls, and some like huge pens standing in the floating mist and lush forests.
Sceneries along the Golden Whip Stream are most enchanting in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Named after the Golden Whip Rock that it flows by, this 5.7-kilometer-long (3.5 miles) stream, joins the Lute stream in the west and Suoxi Stream in the east. Flanked by ridges and peaks, the crystal clear water makes it possible to observe every action of the fish in the water. Wild flowers are in abundance here.
Yangjiajie is the Park’s last area open for sightseeing, and less crowded. It is featured by the dense forests, clear stream, grandeur valleys, and towering peaks. Here, the 80-meter-high (260 feet) Longquan Waterfall flowing from the cliffs, 10 parallel natural stone walls in Tianbo Mansion, the Wulong Ancient Village standing on the cliffs high over 300 meters (985 feet), and etc. will give you a distinctive travelling experience.
Baofeng Lake Scenic Area is known for 4 wonders: Baofeng Lake - “Classic Lake in the World”, One Line of Sky Gorge, Yinwo Village, and Qi Feng Fei Pu (Unique Peaks and Flying Waterfall). It is also the film location of many Chinese tv series like Journey to the West. Taking a cruise on the clear lake, you will totally feel relaxed and calm down.
To see classic karst landscapes, then Yellow Dragon Cave is the best choice in Zhangjiajie. As the “Most Beautiful Touristy Cave in China”, Yellow Dragon Cave has 13 caves together, where you can see countless stone peaks, stone columns, and stone bamboos, with the highest one reaching 19.2 meters (63 feet). In addition, what goes beyond your expectation is that you can also have a cruise along a river in the cave.
Other attractions worth seeing include: Yellow Stone Stronghold, the largest observing site in the forest park; Ten-Mile Gallery, a 5-km-long (3 mi) walkway built in forests and along valleys with lush forests and rocks; Heavenly Countryside, a fertile trapezoidal farmland at the altitude of over 1,000 meters (3,280 feet), next to which is the deep valley.
1. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park has altogether 5 gates, and entering from East Gate or South one is more convenient. Entering from the East Gate, you can reach the summit quickly; while from the South Gate, the highlight attraction – Golden Whip Stream can be seen within minutes.
2. Ticket fare of eco-buses running inside the scenic area is included in the admission fee, so you can take it when needed. However, bends are very common on the mountain roads. So, if you feel carsick easily, remember to take some medicine.
3. Watch out for the cute but still aggressive monkeys. To prevent the attack from them, it is not advised to wear colorful clothes, carry a bag, or take food out when monkeys are around. A stick or alpenstock is useful to shock the animals away.
4. Due to huge daily temperature difference and changeable weather in the mountainous area, you can take one more overcoat and an umbrella to prevent catching a cold.
5. A pair of comfortable shoes is necessary as you may need to walk and climb a lot.
6. Arrange your travelling time appropriately if you decide to return to city center by coach near the exit. Missing the last coach, you can only take a taxi, which will cost much more.
7. The opening hours of the Park may change due to special weather, so check it in advance.
8. Please prepare some cash. The network may not be stable in some areas of the Park when online payment doesn’t work.
There are hotels and inns in the park and near the Wulingyuan Entrance, most of which do not provide toiletries. A standard double-bed room costs CNY 300 or so.
No, to finish the visit is not difficult for seniors or kids who are fit and capable of doing moderate physical activities. The roads and steps to the major sights are reasonably good to walk. In addition, the scenic area is well-equipped with sightseeing battery cars and cable cars.
