Yes, it's workable and you don't need a visa. Actually, you can stay in China Mainland for up to 15 days without a visa.

Spend 2x10 days in China without visa by going to Hong Kong in between
I'd like to spend more than two weeks in China without getting a visa, so I'm making plans.

Is it possible to spend 10 days in Guangzhou, then 2 days in HK, and then spend another 10 days in Guanzhou, without getting a visa ?

Thanks for the answer ! I have another question : will I not have troubles with the customs entering China, if my leaving ticket is a train ticket to HK, rather than a plane ticket ? People told me that it could be quite difficult to go through the Customs.

We are holding Malaysian passports, we will be arriving in Guanzhou. Plan to spend 5 days then catch hi speed train to HK, spend 2 nites in HK. then catch high speed train to Guiyang. We will spend 14 days around the area and fly home after 2 weeks.
Are we allowed to do that in such a short time to make use of the 15 day free tourist visa?

Yes, you should be allowed. There is no regulation on how many times you can use the visa-free policy in a certain time period. Have fun~

Malaysian passport holders can enjoy visa-free visit to mainland China at most 15 days, so it is okay to travel by high speed train directly from GZ to HK.

Is this possible under the 144 hour visa-free scheme?
We intend to travel from Singapore -> by air to Guangzhou, spend several days in Guangdong Province then -> Hong Kong by high speed train.

Then about less than a week later we intend to travel from Hong Kong -> by air to Shanghai, spend several days here -> Seoul Korea by air.

Basically we are entering China twice under the 144 hour visa-free scheme over a relatively short time frame. Is this permissible?

It is OK to use the policy twice within a short period of time.

But your first itinerary is not eligible if leaving Guangdong by high speed train. You need to travel by bus or ferry and the tickets should be on your hands when arriving from Singapore.
Your second itinerary is perfectly eligible.
