Lhasa Weather in January

The weather in January, the coldest month in Lhasa, is windy and dry, with a big temperature difference between day and night. Although located at a high altitude, Lhasa’s January is not so cold during the day when the sun shines. However, the temperature may drop to -9°C (16 °F) at night. Add on some cutting blasts of wind, it can be bitterly cold.

Generally speaking, it is not a good time to visit Lhasa in January due to the coldness and poor natural scenery. However, it is less crowded, costs much less and the ultraviolet rays are much weaker than in summer.

What to Wear in Lhasa in January

Warm winter clothes, such as a down coat, woolen sweater and thick jeans, are a must. Most hotels in Lhasa don’t have heating facilities. It’s advised to wear a pair of cotton boots that are flat-bottomed, water-proof and with projections on the soles.

Where to Go in Lhasa in January

Though snow can be seen all year round in Lhasa, it’s not a good idea to ski on the plateau. Namtso Lake and Ranwu Lake may be frozen and closed for visitors in January, but the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Sera Monastery appear more magnificent under the blue sky. It is also a good time to enjoy the true features of the snow-capped mountains such as Mt. Everest and Mount Namcha Barwa in 2025.

Other Tips

Bring sunhats, sunglasses, and suntan lotion to avoid being burnt by the strong ultraviolet rays in this high altitude area. Lip balm is also indispensable, considering the extreme dryness. Bring altitude sickness medicine. It’s always necessary to have a physical exam in advance to make you can tolerate the high altitude. Do avoid visiting Lhasa if you have a cold. On arriving in Lhasa, leave enough time to adapt to the local conditions, and avoid any strenuous exercise. Prepare some chocolates in case you lose your appetite.
