Lhasa Weather in February

Lhasa's February is still cold and dry, with a big difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. In spite of the bitter cold at night, the weather is very pleasant during the day when the sun is shinning in the sky. Windy days gradually increase, so flying sand and sandstorms often take place. Snow may be also possible in this month.

Tibetan New Year usually falls in January of the Gregorian calendar, so it’s a good time to experience various Tibetan festive and cultural celebrations. For instance, the Butter Lamp Festival on the evening of the 15th day of the Tibetan New Year, when the Barkhor Street will become a gallery of all shapes of colorful Butter Lamps. Thus, Lhasa may experience a short peak travel period at this time.

Warm and loose clothes are advised such as down jackets, cardigans and warm sport trousers for the climate in Lhasa in February. Wear a pair of thick sports shoes comfortable for walking.

Where to Go in Lhasa in February

Although the natural landscape is not as attractive as that in the summer, the historical and cultural attractions in Lhasa with their mystical and unique Tibetan flavor can be appreciated to their full in the bright winter sunshine in 2025. Recommended places include Potala Palace, Barkhor Street, Jokhang Temple, Drepung Monastery & Tibetan Museum. In addition, it’s a good opportunity to see the true face of the Mount Namcha Barwa thanks to the clear sky.

Other Tips

Be sure to bring sunscreen, sun hat, sun glasses and moistening cream as they are a necessity. Prepare warm gloves, scarf and earmuff in case it snows. A mask or scarf will prevent your face from being affected by the strong sunlight and strong wind when going out. Due to the dryness of the atmosphere, always remember to drink plenty of water. Also pay due respect to the Tibetan people’s customs and religion as a guest in their country. Should you suffer from high blood pressure or heart disease a visit to Tibet could prove life threatening due to the high altitude, please consult your physician prior to booking.
