Lhasa Weather in December

December in Lhasa is not as cold as everyone may think due to the small variation in annual temperature. Compared with many other cities in northern China such as Beijing and Shenyang, Lhasa's weather is much warmer with average temperature of the day at 7-10°C. At night the temperature decreases but it never gets too cold. Also, being regarded as a 'City of Sunlight', Lhasa has more sunny days in winter than any other time of the year, and there is no snow within Lhasa city during this month.

This is an off peak period for travel with fewer tourists, consequently the cost of accommodation and travel is quite a bit less than at other times. As it is relatively comfortable to travel in Lhasa in December, it is an especially good time to go and enjoy the sunshine and azure blue sky.

What to Wear in Lhasa in December

Bring warm clothes, such as sweaters, down jackets, thick pants, long johns and woolen pants. It is also suggested to wear a damp-proof boots or hard- soled shoes. In addition, scarves, hats and gloves are necessary.

Things to Do in Lhasa in December

Because it is warm during the day due to the intensive sunlight, it is comfortable to have a walk to Jokhang Temple, the Potala Palace and Norbulingka. If you have plenty of time, a good rest in a teahouse at the Barkhor Street can be very pleasant and it is a fine opportunity to get to know more about the local culture. Tsetang and Shigatse are suitable for sightseeing tours all-year round. However, it is not advisable to visit Ngari, Namtso or Motuo because the roads may be blocked by heavy snow.

Most days in winter are very sunny, so the atmosphere is very dry. Be sure to drink plenty of water, and if possible have a humidifier in your bedroom. Lip balm and a mask can also be helpful. In addition, travelers who suffer from severe altitude sickness should bring some appropriate medicine with them and be sure to have a good rest upon arrival in Lhasa so as to adapt to the high altitude.
