How to Travel between Hong Kong and Zhongshan

Hong Kong to Zhongshan distance is about 110 kilometers (65 miles). The popular ways to travel between are as follows:
1. The most convenient and fastest way is to take the direct ferry between Hong Kong and Zhongshan, taking about 65-75 minutes at a cost of CNY 200-340 for Economy Cabin.
2. Passengers are also advised to take a direct coach, which needs 2.5-3 hours with a fare of CNY 120-240.
3. Passengers can make a transfer at Guangzhou South Railway Station when traveling between Hong Kong and Zhongshan. This choice usually takes around 2-3 hours with the train ticket fare of about CNY 250 in total for Second Class Seat.

The direct coaches operate frequently from Hong Kong major areas to Zhongshan downtown. Although it spends more time than ferries, it is a flexible and economical transportation with more stops.

3. Hong Kong - Guangzhou - Zhongshan High Speed Train: 2-3 hours, CNY 250 for Second Class Seat

No direct high speed train runs between Hong Kong and Zhongshan. However, passengers can take a high speed train from Hong Kong West Kowloon Railway Station to Guangzhou South Railway Station first, taking about one hour. Then transfer to a high speed train to Zhongshan North Railway Station, taking 0.5h.

From Zhongshan, there are frequent direct coaches every day departing from several places downtown that can take passengers to main areas of Hong Kong. Generally speaking, the travel time is 2.5 to 3 hours.

3. Zhongshan - Guangzhou - Hong Kong High Speed Train: 2-3h, CNY 250 for 2nd Class Seat

Passengers need to take a high speed train from Zhongshan North Railway Station to Guangzhou South Railway Station first because there is no direct high speed train route between Zhongshan and Hong Kong. After arriving, just change to another high speed train to Hong Kong West Kowloon Railway Station.

How to Get from Hong Kong Airport to Zhongshan

1. Direct HKIA - Zhongshan Ferry

Take the direct ferry from HKIA Skypier to Zhongshan departing at 09:50, 12:50 and 18:30. It takes 70 minutes on the way with CNY 280 per person for Economy Cabin.

2. Airport Shuttle Bus + HK - Zhongshan Coach

→ Take bus no.A21 from Hong Kong Airport (Ground Transportation Center) to Cameron Road, Nathan Road first. Then walk southwest around 600 meters (660 yards) to get to Tsim Sha Tsui. It takes around 70 minutes on the way.
→ After arriving, take a direct coach to Zhongshan downtown. Generally speaking, the travel time is 2.5-3 hours, costing less than CNY150 per person.

Travelling with an Australian passport

Hi there, I am planning to travel to Zhongshan from Hong Kong via ferry. I know that Australia and China has a 15 day visa-free agreement. Does that mean that when I get to the Zhongshan port, I will just need to show my passport and I will be allowed entry? Thanks!

Simple proofs of the ticket to leave Mainland China within 15 days and hotel reservation are also needed.

Also I am going to be staying at relatives, not hotel. Would that be okay?

Yes, it's the same and you will accept checks of Mainland China and HK at west kowloon. It's OK to stay at relatives. Just provide the immigration the name, ID number, address, and phone number of your relatives.

As I know, Thai passport holders can visit China visa free from March 1. If you travel before the date, then a visa is needed.

You can take the airport bus directly from Zhongshan City Terminal. It takes about 2 hours and costs CNY 85 per person.
