Urumqi - Kashgar Train
There are 7 pairs of normal trains a day between Urumqi and Kashgar. These rides run a total distance of 1,475 kilometers (917 miles) taking 17.5 to 25 hours on the way. For such a long distance trip, travelers are surely advised to buy a sleeper bed to guarantee a good rest. The hard sleeper ticket is around CNY349.5 per person and the soft sleeper bed is about CNY521.5 per person.
Although Kashgar is an important trading center on Silk Road, up to now, direct rail connection from Kashgar is very limited to other cities out of Xinjiang. Thus, Urumqi plays an irreplaceable role in connecting Kashgar with other cities of China.

Stations along the way: Urumqi South, Turpan, Malan, Heshuo, Yanqi, Korla, Luntai, Kuqa, Xinhe, Aksu, Bachu, Atushi
1. In Urumqi, all these 5 rides stop at both Urumqi Railway Station and the South Station. Travelers can choose the suitable station to use based on their staying places and connection trips. Usually it would be better to leave around 30 to 60 minutes for connection at the same station. If passengers need to transfer between the two stations, by taxi, it would be better to leave around 1.5 to 2 hours between.
2. Kashgar Railway Station is located at North Century Avenue. It is not a very big station, the entrance is in the middle of the building, and baggage room and ticket office are set up on its two sides. As only a few rides are operated daily there, the station may not open in early morning or late night unless there is a train departure or arrival. Currently travelers can reach the station by city bus No. 6, 18, 21, 26 and No. 28. Except the city bus, taxi can also be used to transfer to Abakh Khoja Tomb and other scenic sites.
In addition to these 5 pairs of rail rides, flight is another frequently way used for transfer between. A flight without stopover usually takes about 2 hours. They are good choices for those traveling in a hurry. However, the flight ticket fare is much higher unless there is a good discount offered by airlines. The full price for economy class is around CNY2,820 per person, a good discounted ticket may be even less than CNY500 occasionally. Travelers may check the flight fare as well for better arrangement.
The Urumqi – Kashgar Railway is planned to be extended to Pakistan. There are two routes under planning now: one from Kashgar to Gwadar, the other to Kasachi. This project is aimed to be completed around year 2030 or so. At that time, a direct rail transfer between China and Pakistan will become possible.

00ReplyIt takes about 50 hours to get and the softer sleeper is in super hot demand. So if you plan to travel this way, book a train ticket online as early as possible.

00ReplyThere is no direct train. It's recommended to make a transfer in Urumqi. The hard sleeper from Kashgar to Urumqi costs around CNY300 and from Urumqi to Chongqing costs around CNY500. The hard seat tickets cost much less but it's tired to sit for that long, at leaast 50 hours in total.

00ReplyActually, no high speed train is available between two cities and there are only normal speed trains which take about 41.5 hours to 43.5 hours. A hard seat costs about CNY385 and a hard sleeper costs around CNY650. It is more recommended to book a flight.

00ReplyOnly normal speed train is available, taking at least 11.5 hours and costing around CNY 300 for a hard seat. There is no bullet train.

Is it possible in 2020 to cross the border from China to go to Kashgar? Can you assist travellers to buy train tickets between the two countries? A friend and I are thinking about travelling from Beijing to Xi'an then Urumqi. Also, was is the best time to travel?
