Shangri-La Weather in September
Season: Autumn
September marks the end of summer and beginning of autumn in Shangri-La, with decreasing temperature. When the sun is shining, the temperature can reach above 15°C (58°F), and you will feel cozy and cool. In the evening and on rainy days when the sun is absent, you may feel a little cold with much lower temperature. Therefore, you are advised to bring both thin and thick clothes. Though Shangri-La is still in the rainy season this month, the rainfall decreases to a relatively moderate level at no more than 100 mm on average. From the end of this month, the daylight duration begins to be less than 12 hours.

With less visitors, cheaper hotels, and relatively good weather, September is a nice month to visit Shangri-La. However, if you are planning a trip to Shangri-La from late September to early October 2025, it’s recommended that you advance your plans a bit to avoid the peak tourist season of the National Day holiday in early October.

Where to Go in Shangri-La in September

Songzanlin Monastery is a quaint Buddhist monastery and a must-visit attraction to learn about Tibetan Buddhism when coming to Shangri-La. First of all, you are recommended to walk around the track of Lamuyangcuo Lake before entering the Monastery, where you can have a full view of the Monastery and see the stunning view of the Monastery reflected in the lake. After that, walk into the Monastery to visit Zong Keba Basilica, Zha Cang Basilica, and Sakyamuni Basilica, where you can admire the Buddhist statues and frescoes and feel the strong religious atmosphere.

With favorable climate and beautiful natural scenery, Potatso National Park is a perfect hiking destination in September. There are mainly three sections for hiking. During the first section, you will walk on the gravel and dirt road along creeks for about 1 hour, where you will enjoy the natural scenery of mountain forests. During the second and third sections, you will hike on gentle tracks around the Shudu Lake and Bitahai Lake for about 1.5 hours in total, during which process you will pass through sparkling lakes and alpine meadows with creeks flowing through, and see cute animals like yaks, horses, and squirrels.

3. Niru Village

Niru Village is a Tibetan village with extremely beautiful natural scenery, including steep canyons, vast alpine meadows, clear alpine lakes, and karst plateaus. Called “No.1 Village in the World” by UNESCO experts, it is a paradise for hikers, and there are many hiking routes. In addition, on July 15 of the Chinese lunar calendar, local villagers will celebrate the Dengba Festival. During this period, they will dress up to hold blessing ceremonies, as well as rich entertainment activities like horse racing, bullfighting, and performances of traditional Tibetan dances. In 2025, its corresponding time of the Gregorian calendar is September 6.
