In March, the early spring, temperature rises in Shangri-La but not much, and you may still feel a little cold most of the time. In the first half of the month, the minimum temperature is usually below 0°C (32°F), while in the second half, the minimum can reach above 0°C (32°F). Maximum temperatures are usually around 10-15°C (48-59°F) higher than the minimum. In terms of rainfall, the weather of Shangri-La in March is dry with low precipitation, and you may experience several snowy days. Moreover, daylight hours reach around 12 hours, so you will have more time to travel around. The opening time of some attractions, such as Balagezong, will be longer this month.
March is the shoulder season, so there are fewer tourists, and hotels and airfares are cheaper. Therefore, March 2025 could be a good and cost-effective time to visit Shangri-La.

What to Pack for Shangri-La Trip in March

(1) First half month: For the upper, you are advised to wear thin sweaters, thin wool sweaters, or thin knitwear plus thin downcoats or 3-in-1 jackets. In terms of the pants, you can bring thermal pants plus thick pants.
(2) Second half month: Since Shangri-La climate turns a little warmer at this time, for the upper, you can wear the inner layers mentioned above and change the downcoats into wool overcoats or other thick jackets; or wear the jackets mentioned above and wear thick shirts or thick long-sleeve shirts as the inner layers. As for pants, change the thermal pants into long johns.


Where to Go in Shangri-La in March

Potatso National Park is a great destination for those who love forests, alpine meadows, and lakes, while March, the shoulder season, is one of the best months to visit if you do not want to be bothered a lot by other visitors. Visiting the Park this month, you can admire the snow-covered mountains in the distance, patches of trees, and blue lakes. At the edge of the lake, there will be snow that has not yet completely melted. In addition, while hiking on the park’s trails, you may also see leisurely yaks and horses, and cute squirrels.

2. Dukezong Ancient Town
Ancient Town is one of the best-preserved and largest Tibetan residential complexes in China, where you can enjoy the unique Tibetan architecture and experience Tibetan culture and customs. During the day, you are recommended to go to Guishan Park, which offers an observation deck to overlook the whole ancient town and where a Tibetan Buddhist temple and a huge prayer wheel are located. In the evening, you can go to Sifang Street to enjoy and join in the lively Tibetan dance. Besides, there are many Tibetan delicacies for you to taste in the Town.
3. Balagezong
Balagezong is a scenic spot where you can both enjoy the natural landscape of snow-capped mountains, canyons, etc., and experience Tibetan culture. Recommended attractions include: the quaint and quiet thousand-year-old Bara Village, where you can see Tibetan-style wooden buildings and colorful prayer flags; the splendid Shangri-La Stupa formed naturally, which is still thick with snow this month; and Shangri-La Grand Canyon, where can see spectacular cliffs as well as clear and turquoise river.

Tip
Shangri-La is at a high altitude, so be aware of your physical condition and avoid strenuous exercise at all times, especially when visiting Balagezong and Potatso National Park, whose highest altitudes are both over 4,000 meters (13,123 feet miles).
