3-Day itinerary of Haikou - Dongzhaigang Nature Reserve - Wenchang Confucian Temple - Dongjiao Coconut Palms Forest

Day 1 Crater Park - Holiday Beach

Visit Crater Park in the morning. The park is located in Shishan Town, Xiuying District. You can take bus No. 7, 14, 16, 24, 27, 28, or 33 to Haibo Market. Transfer to a bus toward Shishan and alight at the park. The bus runs every 15 minutes. It takes 20 - 30 minutes and costs CNY3 per person. The admission fee of the park is CNY60 and the suggested visiting time is 3 hours. As the name suggests, the park is noted for a group of volcanoes and the nearby volcanic landform along with the unique vegetation of tropical rainforest. You are advised to hire a guide at the site so that you will learn more about the volcanoes.

Afterward, take tourist bus line 2 from the park to Haikou South Bus Station and transfer to bus No.35 to Holiday Beach. Enjoy the warm sunshine, golden sands and clear seawater there. There is also a water park and a barbeque garden near the beach.

Stay overnight in the city. We recommend the 3 star Haikou Hotel, located at No.4 Haifu Road, near Haikou People's Park.

Day 2 Dongzhaigang Natural Reserve - Wenchang Confucian Temple

Dongjiao Coconut Palms Forest

Check out of the hotel and walk southeast along the Wuzhishan Road in front of your hotel for about 180 meters to take a bus No.28. Alight at Meishe Bridge after 7 stops. Move forward along the road for about 200 meters to catch a tourist bus No.4 to Dongzhaigang Natural Reserve. Located in Yanfeng Town, Dongzhaigang is the biggest mangrove nature reserve in China, rich in trees and birds. You will need to take a boat to visit there. Admission fee is CNY120, including the sightseeing boat.

After lunch, take a taxi (about CNY100) to Wenchang Confucian Temple, located at No. 77 Wendong road, Wenchang City. The Wenchang Confucian Temple is the most complete ancient building complex in Hainan. It is different from other temples as it has no main entrance, but only two side doors. In China, all the temples have main entrances in the south. It is said that the local people would not open the main entrance until some one in Wenchang got the Number One Scholar (title conferred on the one who came first in the highest imperial examination). Unfortunately, no one ever got the title, so there's no main entrance in the temple. Admission is CNY15 per person. Stay overnight in Wenchang City.

Day 3 Tonggu Ridge Scenic Spot - Dongjiao Coconut Palms Forest

In the morning, visit the Tonggu Ridge Scenic Spot. You can take a bus from Wenchang Bus Station (No.375, Xinfeng Road) to Longlou Town (1 hour, CNY6), and then hire a local mini van or taxi (about CNY200 per day) for the whole day's trip. Tonggu Ridge has an altitude of 338 meters (1,109 feet), and is regarded as the highest mountain in south of Hainan. It is said in the Han Dynasty (202BC - 220 AD), a general left a bronze drum (in Chinese, Tong Gu) on the top of the mountain, hence the name. The scenic area is free to enter.

Continue your trip to the Dongjiao Coconut Palms Forest in the afternoon, which is located in the peninsula Dongjiao Town. You will have a chance to enjoy the different kind of coconut palms along the golden beach. You can also rent a bicycle at the Bailaima Resort to visit around at the rate of CNY25 per day. The scenery of the nearby beach is fantastic. The site is free to enter. If time permit, you are advised to stay overnight at the local Bailaima Resort. For your dinner, we suggest that you have a taste of the local famous Wenchang Chicken and all kinds of seafood at a local restaurant.

Otherwise, you may transfer back to Haikou. Your tour will end here and we hope you will have enjoyed it.
