Yunnan Weather in May

In short: beginning of the rainy season with moderate rainfall, cozy climate in most places

On most days in May, the maximum temperature is around 25°C (77°F), while the minimum temperature is about 10°C (50°F) lower. Therefore, you will feel fairly warm most time but need to dress more before sunrise and after sunset. This month, the rainy season begins in this area, with a rising but still moderate rainfall. There will still be many sunny days and your travel plan will not be disturbed by rain a lot. Though the rainfall becomes more, the air is still a little dry because of the topography.
 This month, the temperature rises to a relatively not-so-cold level, with the high of above 15°C (59°F) and the low of around 5°C (41°F). Besides, the rainfall is at a moderate level. Therefore, May is a relatively good time to go to these places.
 This area also enters rainy season, and their monthly rainfall may reach above 100 mm. The weather is a little changeable, so you need to check the weather forecast from time to time and bring rain gear when go out. Despite the increasing rainfall, the sunshine is still strong. Actually, it is one of the hottest months there. On most days, the high temperature is above 30°C (86°F). Therefore, the climate decides that May is not a perfect time to travel to southern Yunnan.

 In May, when the temperature is moderate and the rainfall is not so much, you are advised to find a sunny day to cycle around the Erhai Lake. You can start from Dali Ancient City after having a local breakfast. On the way, besides the beautiful blue Erhai Sea, you will also pass by: Longkan Wharf, a perfect spot for admiring sunrise; Xizhou Ancient Town, which well retains ancient buildings and where you can feel the traditional culture of the Bai ethnic group; the Haishe Park, which is rich in natural landscapes; and Zhoucheng, where you can experience the tie-dyeing of the Bai ethnic group; etc.

 In May, it is suitable for hiking in the Western Hills and getting close to nature. Besides the natural scenery, you will also see Huating Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temples in Yunnan; and Dragon Gate built on the cliff with exquisite grottoes and stone statues. On the way down, you could take the ropeway and overlook the entire Dianchi Lake. Stone Forest should also not be missed: Major Stone Forest Scenic Area is majestic, including Knife Stones, Typical Stones, Jianfeng Pool, etc.; while Minor Stone Forest Scenic Area is dreamy, including Ashima Stone, etc. Moreover, this month, Dongchuan Red Land is at its most beautiful time with red ground, golden wheat and highland barley, and green taro seedlings.

 At the beginning of May, Cangyuan, Lincang will organize Monihei Carnival, a mud festival. During the festival, you can watch interesting performances and taste delicious local food. The liveliest activity is to smear each other with a kind of mud specially made from plants to express blessings. If you are interested, remember to search for its specific schedule in 2025 in advance. Besides, Lincang is a good place to experience culture of Wa ethnic group. A related place recommended is Wengding Village, where you can experience welcome ceremonies organized by local villagers, wear ethnic costumes, see traditional buildings, and taste local food.  
 
On most days in May, Yunnan is less crowded and the hotel prices are lower. However, the several days at the beginning of the month are exceptions. At that time, China will welcome the May Day holiday for five consecutive days and all attractions will be hot. Therefore, you are advised to avoid traveling to Yunnan during this period, or book your tickets and hotels for this period in advance.
