To visit mountainous Zhangjiajie, comfortable casual wear and sportswear with good quick-drying properties are the best clothes to pack. In addition, the city has a big temperature difference between day and night, as well as between the downtown and mountains, ranging 5 - 10℃ (41 - 50℉), so taking an extra coat is necessary. Other necessary items include umbrella, sun protection items and a hiking stick.

The temperature in March and April is mild in general. The average high temperature in these 2 months are 15 ℃ (59℉) and 22℃ (71.6℉) respectively. The 5 months are hot and the monthly average highest temperature ranges 27 - 33℃ (80.6 - 91.4℉). July and August are the hottest months. In the downtown area, it is often over 35℃ (95℉) in the 2 months. To protect your skin and eyes under the burning sunshine, please pack sunglasses, sun hat, and sunscreen cream. 

In these months, shorts and a short-sleeved T-shirt with good breathability and sweat absorption are best dressing codes. While, it is often 5℃ (41℉) lower in the mountains than in the urban area, so don’t forget to take another thin single-layer coat to keep warm, which can also protect your skin from the strong UV rays.

In addition, May, June, and July have the highest rainfall all year around in Zhangjiajie. Please take an umbrella and a raincoat in case it rains. Due to the high humidity, if you go to the mountains, anti-slid shoes are very practical.

After mid-November, it turns very cold in the mountains. A thick coat, pants and sweater can keep you warm if you go there. To the end of the month, a light down jacket is needed.

 

How to Dress in Zhangjiajie from December to next February

It is the coldest period in Zhangjiajie and the monthly average temperature is about 5 - 7℃ (41℉ - 44.6℉). The wind is strong on the mountain peak. Therefore, warm clothes like sweaters, downcoat and thick trousers are needed. It is possible to snow in winter here. Therefore, shoes not only need to keep your feet warm but also prevent you from slipping. A solid climbing stick can avoid falling on mountains. The air is dry during this time, so please take some moisturizing products.

Tips:
1. Zhangjiajie weather is not stable, especially in the mountains. Sometimes, even if in January - the month with the lowest precipitation, rain or snow would fall suddenly. As a result, a raincoat or umbrella is useful even if you have checked the weather forecast. 

2. For a long time hiking in the mountains, take a thermos and some hot water, which help warm you up in the cold winter.
 

Other Essential Items to Take to Visit Zhangjiajie

1. Toothpaste and toothbrushes, which are not provided by some of the old hotels in Zhangjiajie;

2. Hiking stick: Panning to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain (Heaven's Gate)? A hiking stick is necessary in these places with too many staircases, especially when you go down the mountains.

3. Cash: In Zhangjiajie, both cash and digital payments are supported. The most commonly used digital payments are WeChat Pay and AliPay. If you don’t have access to them, bring with you enough cash. Anyway, even if you successfully activate them, it’s still advisable to take some cash, as the cellphone signal in mountains may not be stable.

4. Camera: The natural beauty in Zhangjiajie like the Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain is really breathtaking, so take a camera to record that.

5. Passport: You need to show your passport to buy the entry ticket and then enter the scenic spot.

6. Power Bank: You may need to charge your smartphone while in the scenic areas.

7. Snack and Drinking Water: Inside scenic areas, the price for food is higher. Preparing some snacks and 1 - 2 bottles of water before going inside.
