Great Wall Expedition from Jinshanling to Simatai
Published: December 3, 2008
On the first of December, TravelChinaGuide sent a small group of company members on a hiking expedition to the Jinshanling and Simatai sections of the Great Wall in the first day of December. Geographically, the Jinshanling Great Wall is in Luanxian County, Hebei Province, and the Simatai Great Wall is in Miyun County of Beijing. Jinshanling to Simatai is a popular hiking route attracting many adventurous backpackers who wish to see the most picturesque views of the Great Wall.

The expedition team departed very early in the m orning for it takes about 3 hours from downtown Beijing before the hiking can begin at Jinshanling. This part of the wall is not as well preserved as Badaling. There are few tourists and it is not commercialized. Fragmented walls and broken watchtowers display a natural and wild great wall. The entire 10.5 km hiking tour took nearly 6 hours before the group passed through to Simatai.
We learnt from the experience that hiking between Jinshanling and Simatai needs a lot of physical strength and it is unsuited to aged tourists and younger children. Safety is a high priority to those who are really interested in visiting this part of the Great Wall.
