Day 2 Beijing
Visit Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City, have an a la carte welcome lunch; enjoy a Hutong walk Tour, and visit a local family in a courtyard house. (B+L)
Your 14 days family tour officially kicks off today. After enjoying a buffet breakfast at the hotel, follow the guide to explore the charming city of Beijing. First, we will come to Tiananmen Square. Located on the central axis of Beijing, this world's largest city square holds many historic buildings including Great Hall of the People and Monument to the People's Heroes.
To the north of the Square lies the Forbidden City, an enormous wooden palace complex inhabited by emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368 – 1911 AD). Our guide will next show you around this spot. Aka Palace Museum, it houses many treasures once belonging to the royal family and is a place to learn about ancient royal life. For instance, you can visit the study to the east of Gate of Heavenly Purity to find traces of princes’ daily life. You will learn that, born with a golden spoon in mouth, those princes didn’t seem to live a carefree life: They must get up at 3 am for morning reading and literature lessons until 13:00, and continue to learn horse riding and archery in the afternoon, day in, day out; except on a few holidays during Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival.
At noon, we will offer you an a la carte lunch worth CNY 150 per person, which is included in the price. The guide will be glad to recommend you some local specialties and help you with the ordering. Here you will also have a chance to taste the traditional crispy Roast Duck.
In the afternoon, we will visit the Temple of Heaven, the imperial sacrificial building complex for Ming and Qing dynasties (1368 – 1911 AD). It’s not only a library to learn about relevant culture, but also a park to see locals exercising, playing chess, doing Tai Chi martial art, dancing, and so on. Next, take a stroll through the Hutongs area, Beijing’s historical part made up by alleys lined with Chinese courtyard houses, in the Dongcheng District. We will explore the area after enjoying a panoramic view of the area first on the Drum Tower. Like the Forbidden City, Hutongs are another must-visit for those traveling in Beijing. Authentic traditional life happens everywhere here: in the courtyard behind the wide-open gate, from the unlocked cage for free-ranging pigeons and bicycles before the houses, etc. There is also a drumming performance given hourly from 13:00 to 17:00, which, if time permits, we will appreciate. A visit to a local family in a courtyard house is followed. Interact with the family, and choose one from these cultural activities to experience: calligraphy, facial painting (an art derived from Peking Opera), and paper cutting.
● Dinner Suggestion: As to where for dinner, why not take kids to try AI-powered Haidilao Hot Pot at World City? The first smart restaurant in Beijing, it will fascinate you with neon lights, robotic arms in the kitchen, and futuristic projections from giant screens! We can help you reserve seats if you are interested.
