About Temple of Heaven

Temple of Heaven is the world's largest ceremonial building complex. The emperors worshipped heaven and prayed for harvest there in Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911 AD). It is a treasure of ancient Chinese architecture as well as a true portrayal of the ancient oriental civilization. In 1998, it was recognized as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

Attractions you shouldn’t miss in the Temple of Heaven:

Altar of Prayer for Good Harvests

It is for praying for good harvest in the first lunar month. It is 38.2 meters (125.3 feet) high and has a diameter of 24.2 meters (79.4 feet).

Echo Wall

The Echo Wall is the circular wall of Imperial Vault of Heaven. It has the effect of echo. If two persons stand respectively under the east wall and the west wall and speak softly toward the north, they can clearly hear the echo of their words.

Circular Mound Altar

The emperors worshipped the Heaven there on the winter solstice every year. The number of stone steps, stone slabs and stones of each tier are all in multiples of nine, which emphasizes the supremacy of the Heaven as nine is considered a positive number showing emperors’ dignity. There is the Heaven Heart Stone at the center of top tier. When people stand on the stone and speak, the voice sounds extremely sonorous.

It is the oldest overpass in Beijing, higher in the north and lower in the south. There are 3 lanes on the bridge respectively for the emperors, the Emperor of Heaven and the ministers from east to west in ancient time.

Overall it was a great visit. However, in the exhibition halls there is very little English so we could not follow what was happening in the photos. The booking of the tickets and the timing of the confirmation was great. We will recommend you to friends.

I am fairly impressed with the information and service provided by TravelChinaGuide. I was able to get insightful information on my selected destinations. The service is always prompt and courteous. Candy Wang, the agent that was in touch with me during my booking process and follow up, was very professional and responded to my questions with to the point answers. I was able to book flights, train and destination admission tickets through TravelChinaGuide. The train tickets were delivered to my hotel and I picked them up from the front desk (for a reasonable fee).

My only knock about their service was that the service charge for train and admission tickets are set at $5 USD. So for a 35 RMB train ticket, its service charge can be quite high. TravelChinaGuide may also consider giving discounts for volume purchases (discount for many tickets in one transaction instead of charge per ticket).

I appreciate their service and may buy from TravelChinaGuide again.
