Half-Day Beijing Hutong Tour by Rickshaw

In old times, rickshaws functioned like modern taxis, shuttling among the crisscross hutongs in Beijing. Although their function as transportation tools has gone, they still run to serve tourists to the city, and have been a traditional and interesting way for tourists to experience the life of old Beijingers.

Originally, rickshaws are two wheeled and pulled by one person on foot. The present rickshaws are three wheeled and ridden by drivers, saving their energy. There are also electricity powered ones, but they give less antique feelings.

Where to Ride a Rickshaw in Beijing – Best Choice Shichahai
Rickshaws can be found in many Hutongs of the city, like Bada Hutong and Nanluoguxiang (South Gong and Drum Lane). But the most recommended place is Shichahai

On the one hand, rickshaws there are under the unified management and there is little chance to meet private rickshaw drivers who will cheat you. On the other hand, the area is not only abundant in hutongs and courtyards including Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling and Yandaixie Street, but also famous for the water scenery; so you can enjoy a more rewarding rickshaw trip.

Tips on Beijing Hutong Tour by Rickshaw
1. One rickshaw can serve at most 2 passengers each time.
2. Choose the licensed rickshaw and drivers in uniform, in case of being cheated. Some unregistered drivers use the electricity powered rickshaw, rather than ride it by themselves; some ask for higher price midway; some often cut in or ride very fast to save time, regardless of tourists’ safety…
3. Double confirm the price and traveling route before getting on the rickshaw.
4. Remember the rickshaw number and driver’s number in case that you want to lodge a complaint if not satisfied about the service.
