We are US Citizens
We will be flying into Shanghai from US and then leaving on a 5 day cruise to Japan
We will return to Shanghai at the end of the Cruise
We will then fly out of Shanghai to US
Do we need a Visa? or will the 144hr visa free transit cover this?

No, you don't need a visa. You will be covered by the 144-hour visa free transit. Actually, you will get two of it, one for the route US - Shanghai - Japan and the other for Japan - Shanghai - US. Just make sure you don't have any other stopovers in mainland China before and after Shanghai.

You are in the city center and very close to the Bund. The recommended attractions for you at day time is Shanghai Museum, Yu Garden, City God's Temple, Jing'an Temple and at night the Bund and Huangpu River Cruise.
