Turpan means 'the lowest place' in the Uygur language and 'the fertile land' in Turki. Occupying an area of 15,738 square kilometers (6,076.5 square miles), Turpan City Prefecture is located to the southeast of Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The Ancient City of Gaochang along with the ancient city of Jiaohe is the best-preserved ruins of the ancient cities in China. Situated at the foot of the Flaming Mountain, it is about about 47 kilometers (29 miles) southeast of Turpan.
The Ancient City of Jiaohe is 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) west of the perfecture , covering an area of 220,000 square meters (over 54 acres). It is very distinct in its layout.
The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves lies 45 kilometers (28 miles) east of Turpan. It was regarded as the most valuable one among the local Buddhist caves.
Emin Minaret (10)
The Emin Minaret stands 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) east of Turpan. It is the largest ancient tower in Xinjiang and the only Islamic tower of China.
Flaming Mountain (9)
If you have ever read the Chinese classical novel 'Journey to the West', you will be very familiar with the Flaming Mountain. In reality, the mountain is located 10 kilometers (6.2miles) east of Turpan.
Karez System (20)
The Karez systems in Xinjiang, along with the Great Wall and the Grand Canal, are considered as the three great projects of ancient China.

Traveling in this traditional Uygur city, you will be amazed at the distinctive folk culture. When you go shopping in the streets, take the chance to try the local snacks, like Kebabs, Zhua Fan (Rice Eaten with Hands), Nang, Roast Lamb.

Are there any train services on silk road between Dunhuang & Turpan ? Past tourist travel brochures indicate you could catch an Overnight train ? From your Train search I was only able to find most other train timetables for the destinations I wanted between Xi'an & Urumqi. However I could not find any train routes (timetable) that what I want. Please indicated if any train runs between these two towns If not what is alternative transport between these two towns?

00ReplyThere is no direct train from Dunhuang to Turpan. Maybe you can try to take the train to reach via Liuyuan where you can find several trains daily running to reach Turpan. Liuyuan is a train station about 120 kilometers to Dunhuang city.

ReplyHI , HOW FAR IS ALMATY FROM YOUR CITY URUMQI. BY AIR AND BY TRAIN OR BY BUS. WHICH IS THE CHEAPEST WAY TO GO TO ALMATY FROM THERE.

00ReplyIt is 20-24 hours' drive by bus. You can also take train, but it only has trains at Monday and Saturday. If going by train, you need a transfer and Alashankou, the border and a long waiting time to pass the immigration check. The most recommended way is to going by air, safe and fast.
