Nazeem, I think you might take your wife and daughter to visit the Bund on New Year's Eve. There should be a fabulous light show and count-down activity at the Bund. However, I don't know where and when exactly the related activities will be held.
Last year, the light show was held at Waitan Yuan Square. Unfortunately, a stampede occurred during the count-down activity, causing 36 people dead and 49 injured. So I am not sure if the related activities will be held during this year's new eve.
Another choice is to take a night cruise on the Huangpu River. It's about an hour journey. However, it's enough for you to view the spectacular night view on the both sides of the river.

Thank you Amy. I have read about the stampede too and don't think it's a good idea to be Waitan Yuan Sq for the light show. We'll consider that night cruise. If you have any other good recommendations for activities let me know. Thanks again.

Anu, I am afraid that there is no special fair when you come to Shanghai. You may bring your two years old kid to visit Shanghai Wild Animal Park or Happy Valley.

There are some trade exhibitions like LabelexpoAsia. China International Digital Tv PTV Technical Equipment Exhibitation. I have no idea if that are interesting to you. As to places to see, Shanghai and other nearby cities such as Hangzhou, Suzhou and waters towns are good choices.

I am planning a family holiday to Shanghai, btw mid Dec. Was wondering should I travel on our own or join a local land tour. Which is cheaper or better. Will it snow during tat period in that place? will I miss the beautiful scenery during the period in Jin Mao Tower, at the Bund etc

The climate at that time is dry and a little bit cold with a temperature at about 7-15C.
Jin Mao Tower and the Bund are all buildings rather than natural scenery, so you shall not concern whether it's winter or summer.
