Longmen Grottoes is one of the three best grottoes in China with value of carving art, history and Buddhism. It was built in 493 AD in Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD), and was continually constructed for over 500 years until Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 AD). Thus a 1-km grottoes gallery on banks of Yi River formed, consisting of over 2,300 caves, more than 100 thousands statues, and no less than 2,800 tablet inscriptions. Among these statues, the Vairocana Buddha Sculptures are the best-known. You can see the graceful Vairocana Buddha in the middle with a variety of statues in the surroundings, which are extraordinary. You will feel peaceful at the feet of this Buddha.
You can also see the most valuable Guyang Cave, Binyang Cave and Lotus Cave that were all built in Northern Wei Dynasty, especially the Binyang Cave. In Binyang Cave, you will be surprised at the middle cave, south cave, north cave and the four-storey reliefs describing Buddhist stories.
If you are fond of visiting the Buddhist temples, Fengxian Temple in the west and Xiangshan Temple in the east are a great choice. You can appreciate a group of vivid reliefs as well in Fengxian Temple. And Xiangshan Temple is a peaceful place to purify your mind even though there are a lot of visitors all the times.
