People's Assembly Hall
People's Assembly Hall, located on Renmin Road in downtown Chongqing, faces Chongqing Three Gorges Museum across Renmin Square. Standing majestically in the city center, it is a landmark building in this city and considered as one of the ten cultural symbols of Chongqing. From a distance, the grand hall dominates the skyline.
The hall complex is a cluster of attached structures including the hall and three attached buildings respectively to the east, south and north. Collectively, they cover 16.3 acres (about 6.6 hectares) of which the hall accounts for 4.6 acres (about 1.9 hectares). The hall is 213 feet high (about 65 meters) and has a capacity of more than 4,000 seats.
Chongqing People's Assembly Hall enjoys tremendous popularity in China and beyond for its distinctive architectural characteristics. It is mainly in the style of the Ming (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1616 - 1911), combined with western architectural style. The assembly hall consists of two parts: the upper palace-style dome is built after the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, implying praying for prosperity and peace while the lower part is a row of thick columns.
At a first glance, visitors will be engrossed by the imposing structure nestled in lush trees. The greenish glazed dome and scarlet columns form a striking but delightful contrast, making the Assembly Hall more gorgeous. Approaching the building, you will find its pillars and other structural elements are ornately sculpted. Excluding the assembly hall, there are facilities such as guesthouses, recreation rooms, and banquet hall. So far, the hall has received more than a hundred of China's national leaders and official dignitaries from other countries. Meanwhile, it also serves as a theatre.
In 1951, under the leadership of Marshal He Long, an auditorium was built at Chongqing to accommodate domestic and overseas guests. Completed in 1954, it was named as the Chongqing People's Assembly Hall in 1955. At the turn of the twenty first century, Renmin square with a musical fountain and an evergreen meadow was completed in front of the hall. The square is loved by leisurely local people. They usually do exercises in the morning and go for a walk around the square in the afternoon. It is especially bustling in the early evening when many dance delightfully.
The roof of People's Assembly Hall is adorned with multicolor neon lights, providing a superb opportunity for taking night photos. If you want to take a panoramic picture of this splendid hall, the Three Gorges Museum facing the hall is the best place without question.
