China Visa on Arrival

China eases the Port Visa application to offer more convenience to foreigners who urgently seek to visit China for non-diplomatic or nonofficial purposes, such as business activities, private affairs, family unions, or exchanges and visits. Foreigners who are unable to obtain a visa beforehand in time now can apply for a port visa on arrival with an invitation letter or other supportive documents.

Foreigners normally need to obtain a visa for a trip to China before departure, while in certain cases they are likely to get a China visa on arrival at entry ports. The validity counts from the day following your entry and only one entry is allowed. Once you exit from China, the VOA expires.

Below are two cases where you can apply for China visa on arrival:

Visa on Arrival at Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Xiamen, and Hainan for Tourists

Visa on Arrival Valid for Eligible Ports Areas Allowed to Stay
In Shenzhen 5 days Luohu (Lo Wu), Huanggang, Shekou and Fuyong ports, Shenzhen Airport Shenzhen
In Zhuhai 3 days Gongbei, Hengqin and Jiuzhou ports Zhuhai
In Xiamen 5 days Xiamen Airport Xiamen
In Hainan 30 days Haikou Airport, Sanya Airport, cruise ports in Haikou and Sanya Mainland China

Note:
In comparison with others, Hainan enjoys more privileges for issuing a VOA besides the Hainan 30-Day Visa-Free Access. The landing visa you get in Hainan can last as long as 30 days. You can use it to visit other cities in mainland China and exit from all ports open to foreigners. In addition, the VOA is also available for international cruise ship travelers who disembark in Haikou or Sanya.

Who is eligible?

Passport holders of most countries can easily get a VOA, such as the US, France, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland and Spain.

Some may apply for it by showing passports with proof that they have been issued a Chinese visa before by embassies and consulates. It is helpful but some may still be rejected.

Countries not eligible include Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, India, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Sudan, Turkey, and Yemen.

How to apply?

When you get to the VOA office at the border, just complete the application form, take a photo and pay the fee. The visa will be issued within 5 to 10 minutes. You may need to wait longer if the room is busy.

In Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Xiamen, what you need for the application is just a valid passport, while if you apply for the Hainan visa on arrival, return ticket and hotel bookings are required as well.

What's the cost for China visa on arrival?

It costs CNY 275 for applicants of most countries, but UK nationals have to pay CNY 834 and US 1,234 based on a reciprocal basis. Only CNY in the cashless form is accepted for payment and dollars are not accepted.

Tips

1. There are nearly 10 ports linking Shenzhen with Hong Kong, while tourists can only get the Shenzhen VOA from Luohu, Huanggang, Fuyong, Shekou, and the airport. Please be cautious when travelling to Shenzhen from Hong Kong to find the right port.

2. Upon arriving at the Gongbei immigration building in Zhuhai, you can find the office by passing all the duty free shops; it is behind a green door on the right hand side of the immigration building. Currency can be changed at the China Tourist Services Office back downstairs in the immigration hall.

Visa on Arrival for Travelers in Emergencies

Aliens may, under circumstances where they must necessarily rush to China but have no time for an application, apply for a visa on arrival at entry ports as authorized by the Ministry of Public Security.

This always requires an invitation from an accredited Chinese organization which explains the emergency, mostly related to business purposes that from the Chinese perspective it is important that you be admitted without delay, or that you are in a life-and-death situation.

Warning: Not all applicants are guaranteed to obtain a landing visa, thus it's advised to get a visa in advance if time permits. See details on how to apply for a China visa

Hi! Just have a question. I want to use this 5-day visa-free entry to visit relatives, entering via Xiamen but they live in Quanzhou - thats okay to declare, right? I also intend to exit via Xiamen to Taipei. I hold an Australian passport and have been to China before with a visa 👍 i find the visa application process tedious so hopefully this is allowed

Grace, unfortunately you cannot use 5 days visa on arrival in Xiamen to visit Quanzhou. Also, recent experience shows that Chinese authorities are no more issuing Xiamen visas on arrival, but insist on 144 hour visa free transit.

Your itinerary:

Manila - Xiamen - Taipei

Is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Xiamen and you do not need any kind of visa. However, the main problem is that your stay is limited to the area of Xiamen city that covers roughly 1.700 km2 of area and Quanzhou is located outside of it.

To conclude, you can use your itinerary to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in Xiamen and maybe to ask your relatives to visit you in Xiamen since the distance is quite close. You cannot visit them in Quanzhou and this detail is very important to emphasize.

It may take 4-5 working days and you can apply for expedited service.
Basic requirements:
Passport
Visa application form (completed online and signed) and Photo
Documents showing the itinerary including air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation, etc. or an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China.

Peter, I would not suggest you to apply for a Chinese visa at some office in Hong Kong when you can get a single entry Chinese visa on arrival at Lo Wu (Luohu) border crossing. This is a new thing, but it functions. Here I am not talking about Shenzhen visa on arrival, but about a real whole China valid visa on arrival. So, your best option is to take a train to Lo Wu (Luohu) border crossing, to be ready for a long queue and here you will be able to obtain a single entry Chinese tourist visa. I am not certain about its validity, but I would say that it is 30 days. The price for this visa for Canadian citizens is 406 CNY that you will pay at the border crossing.

You mean VOA payment? Yes, the fee should be paid in RMB Yuan in the cashless form, like credit cards, Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Major global credit cards definitely. By the way, it would be better to say, cashless than contactless, but whatever... There are recent information that Chinese authorities accept even cash, but only CNY. In any case, I would rely on a credit card.

Budi, you did not mention how will you enter Guangzhou? Will you travel on a Chinese visa issued in advance? If you will travel on a Chinese visa issued in advance, you definitely have right to enter China in Zhuhai, visit Guangzhou and exit China from Shenzhen toward Hong Kong. This is perfectly legal.

However, if you intend to visit Zhuhai on a visa on arrival, I would like to inform you that you are not allowed to proceed to Guangzhou because Zhuhai visa on arrival is limited to Zhuhai only.

Hello,

You can fly and travel within Hainan under 30 days visa free access and not by applying for 30 days visa on arrival. Visa on arrival is not yet functional, so you will not be able to leave Hainan to visit other parts of the mainland China. Also, your flights to and from Hainan are not allowed to have any landing within the rest of mainland China. You can arrive and depart to/from Hainan from/to Hong Kong or any other third country, but not via the rest of mainland China, so take care of this detail. I can see that you are mentioning a flight from/to Guangzhou, but you cannot do that. You can arrive to Hainan form non - mainland China area, enjoy Hainan visa free and leave Hainan to non - mainland China area. Hope this is clear enough to you to organize your journey on time and not to lose any money.
